Users can easily fix any autocorrect mistakes by tapping on the underlined word. The update also includes an improved autocorrect feature with temporary underlines to indicate autocorrected words. These are just some of the major highlights of iOS 17. The NameDrop feature allows users to share contact details and Contact Posters by simply bringing two devices close together using AirDrop. Users can edit their profiles to customize how their contact information is presented. This feature offers a new way to display incoming calls, contact profiles, FaceTime, and Messages. It can even transition into a low-light smart display at night for use as an alarm clock.Īnother visual upgrade in iOS 17 is the introduction of Contact Posters. This feature provides widgets, calendar info, music, photos, news, and sports scores. IOS 17 also introduces StandBy, which turns your iPhone into a smart display when it’s horizontal and charging. The update also includes gesture-based augmented reality (AR) effects for video messages. FaceTime calls can even be answered on the Apple Watch in audio-only mode. The Continuity Camera feature also enables users to display FaceTime video calls on Apple TV using their iPhone, iPad, or MacBook cameras. In terms of FaceTime, iOS 17 introduces video voicemail, allowing users to leave video or voice messages when a call goes unanswered. Additionally, Apple has consolidated stickers into one drawer and added sticker effects like “shiny” and “puffy.” These stickers can be applied to photos and documents as well. It can even notify you if you’re headed in the wrong direction. Another helpful feature is Check-In, which automates the process of notifying someone when you arrive home. This feature uses machine learning to transcribe voice notes, providing accurate results even with different accents. Apple has made several improvements to Messages, including audio message transcription. One of the notable updates in iOS 17 comes to Messages and FaceTime. While it may be tempting to try out the early build, it’s important to remember that early releases of iOS, including the public beta, can be rough around the edges and apps may not function properly. Usually, access to betas immediately after Apple’s WWDC keynote requires a paid developer account costing $100 per year. It’s worth noting that this year, Apple released the developer beta for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS Sonoma to anyone with a free developer account. As always, it’s important to back up your iPhone before installing any beta software and ensure that it’s compatible with iOS 17 (compatible devices include the iPhone XS and newer models from 2018). To access the iOS 17 preview, simply enroll on Apple’s website and the beta will be pushed to your iPhone’s Software Update section. However, if you’re interested in features like machine learning voice note transcription or turning your iPhone into a smart display, you may be willing to give the public beta a try. Some of the more exciting features, such as the new Journal app, will be released later in the year. While there may be a few bugs to contend with, the new update brings a host of features and upgrades.
